Wrestlers take another tournament title

On Saturday, December 12, the MMS Wrestling team travelled to Birchwood Middle School in North Providence for an annual varsity tournament. Coach Bob Rodericks and his team were there to defend last year’s title and bring home another trophy for the Wildcats.

“We’re feeling pretty good for this point of the season, so we ought to be among the top scorers,” said Coach Rodericks on Friday afternoon.

Coach Rodericks’ prediction was correct as five of his wrestlers appeared in the finals and four were crowned champion. Martin won the tournament with 183 points, topping second place Kickemuit by more than 30 points (editor’s note: That’s a lot in a wrestling tournament!)

At the end of the tournament, Coach Rodericks was happy with the championship, but was equally pleased with the improvement shown by his team.

“Two kids who lost last week in dual meets pinned the same opponent today. We are getting better every day and that’s what we want at this point in the season,” said Rodericks.

The Wildcats will take on McCourt Middle School on Wednesday at home as they continue their road to defending last season’s State Championship. Following are the place winners in yesterday’s tournament.

  • D’ante Silva 1st
  • Keegan Seagrave 1st
  • Emmanuel Santiago 1st
  • Cameron Bailey 1st
  • Austin Phillips 2nd
  • Richard Maciel 3rd
  • Eric Robinson 3rd
  • Jared Wood 4th
