Saying Goodbye to Martin
by 8th grade student Eliza V.
As we come to the end of the 2015-2016 school year, the graduating 8th grade says goodbye to Martin Middle School. It’s been such a great three years here at Martin with my fellow 8th graders. I couldn’t have asked for a better class of 2016. To close out the year, I wanted to know how my peers felt about their time here. I developed a 5 question survey and sent it out to the students of the graduating class to take during homeroom one day last week. When I tallied up the results, I was actually surprised by how most people had responded.
Even though students always complain about how much they hate school and how boring it is and whatever other complaint they can come up with it’s not true. Out of 120 surveys, 25% of them said they would miss MMS after they left at the end of the year. It may not seem like a lot, but compared to all the other answers it is. The next question also shocked me for the same reason. I asked if the students learned anything that they knew they were going to use later on. The majority at 38% said yes. I think that teachers will be very excited to hear this and I applaud them at the great success. My third question asked if they were excited to move on to the high school. I was not surprised to learn that 57% of the 8th grade answered yes again.
My last two questions were multiple choice, giving students a way to answer best. The fourth question asked what was their favorite part of Martin. The choices were: the education, the friendships, the teachers and staff, or the classes. The most answers went to the friendships, which didn’t shock me because it is true. Many great friendships have grown here at Martin and many will last forever. My last question asked students to pick one activity out of a list of 10 options that they would recommend to other students. 57 or 48% of the surveys said they recommended sports teams. Most of the students here at Martin are hard core athletes.
I was so happy to conduct this survey for my last Media Team project. As I end my own year here at Martin, I am thankful for the great experience that the staff and classes have provided. I have made some wonderful friends and have learned things I will take to the high school and beyond. On behalf of the graduating 8th grade class, thank you Martin for a great three years.
